Overview
Instructional design is where you plan a course before you build it. You describe it as a matrix: the competencies it develops, the objectives that serve them, the content that works each objective, the learning activities that practice it and the evaluation activities that prove it. Creator checks that everything lines up as you work, and once the design is sound it can create the course structure for you.
To start, go to the content library and click New content > Instructional design. Your designs show up in the library next to your courses, and deleting one sends it to the trash.
Not to be confused with Import document, which turns a PowerPoint, PDF or text file you already have into a course.
Create a design
A four-step wizard asks for:
- Details — name, total duration in hours, level, target audience, prior knowledge, context, tone and words per hour (used to size the content the AI writes).
- Structure pattern — with modules (module > unit > section > subsection) or without modules (unit > section > subsection). Once chosen, it can't be changed.
- Competencies — optional.
- Objectives — each with its Bloom level (Creator suggests one from the verb you use) and, if you want, the competencies it serves.
Work in the studio
The studio opens the design with four tabs and a Validation panel always visible beside them.
| Tab | What you do there |
|---|---|
| Outline | Build the tree of modules, units, sections and subsections. From the side inspector you set hours, link objectives to the leaves and add each unit's learning and evaluation activities. |
| Matrix | Two grids: content × objectives and objectives × activities. Click a cell to link or unlink. Empty rows and columns are highlighted, and so are evaluation activities whose instrument falls short of the objective. |
| Competencies and objectives | Create, edit and delete competencies and objectives, and link them to each other. |
| Details | Edit the data from the wizard's first step at any time. |
Objectives are linked only to the tree's leaves (a section or subsection, or a unit with no sections); the objectives you see on higher levels are the sum of their leaves.
Deleting a competency, an objective or an activity asks for confirmation and tells you which links go with it.
Competencies, objectives and activities can be reordered: each row has Move up and Move down buttons (keyboard-friendly — Tab and Enter; no dragging needed). The order you leave is the one the studio, the matrix grids and the Excel export follow. Learning and evaluation activities are ordered within their unit. A screen reader announces the new position.
The outline with the keyboard
Arrow up and down move between nodes. Tab and Shift+Tab move focus out of the outline, as anywhere else. Alt+→ and Alt+← make the selected node deeper or shallower in the tree; Alt+Shift+→ moves it to the end of the previous branch (for example, from a section to the previous unit) and Alt+Shift+←, to the next branch. When it becomes shallower, the node lands right after the node it came out of.
Validation
The Validation panel recalculates with every change and tells apart:
- Errors, which prevent generating the course: an objective with no evaluation activity, an instrument that doesn't reach the objective's Bloom level (a questionnaire reaches "apply", a case study "evaluate", a portfolio or rubric "create"), hours that don't add up (children against their parent, and the total against the sheet's duration) and links on a node that isn't a leaf.
- Warnings, which don't block: objectives with no content, content with no objective, competencies with no objective, evaluating what hasn't been practiced, vague or double verbs, jumps in Bloom level and units with too many objectives.
Click a finding to go to the node it refers to.
AI review
On demand, from the panel's AI review section, you can ask the AI to review the wording of competencies and objectives and the alignment between objectives and activities. It uses credits. Each review stays pending until you accept, correct or dismiss it; it never blocks anything by itself.
Export to Excel
Export to Excel, in the studio header, downloads the design as an eight-sheet .xlsx (Sheet, Modules, Knowledge, Outcomes, Units, Unit headings, Learning activities and Assessment activities), with labels in the interface language.
Generate the course
When the Validation panel shows no errors (warnings don't count), Generate structure creates a new course for each unit, inside a folder named after the design (with modules, one subfolder per module). Each course comes with one lesson per section and the activities as placeholders to develop.
Generation is additive: it never changes an existing course, so generating again creates new courses. Afterwards, Write content asks the AI to write the content of the generated lessons; it uses credits.
Only one generation can run at a time per design. If one stops halfway, generate again with the same scope: the courses that were already complete are kept, the half-built one goes to the trash and only what was missing is created.

Everything above, except the AI review and the AI writing, can also be done over MCP with the design_matrix_* tools: see MCP Server.
